Goodbye from The Papercut Project Manager

Goodbye from The Papercut Project Manager

Yes, you heard me right. It’s been a long time since I gave this site an update but so much has happened since then it’s tough to know where to start. I’ll try to be brief.

PapercutPM went through several iterations over the years, starting as a humorous blog about project disasters to a more serious look at developing project management skills. It then became a vehicle for me to try to get my life back on track when it took a sharp left turn. After things settled and I started teaching, PapercutPM became a place where I could support my students’ lessons.

One thing has never changed, though, and that is my love for soft skills. When I lost my job several years ago, I had to make some hard decisions about what I should do next. In the end, I decided to go back to university and get my degree. Specifically, I wanted to learn more about these soft skills I’ve been preaching about for most of my life, so I earned an undergrad in psychology. I paid my way through school by teaching project management at community college.

My marks were pretty much mid- to high-90s across the board so I wound up securing a scholarship to pursue my Masters degree. Since then, my research has focused on emotional intelligence and its importance in the workplace. However, because I felt it was important to give my research teeth, my actual degree is in Applied Modelling and Quantitative Methods – with a statistics base. One of the terms of my scholarship was the stipulation that I couldn’t work while I received it. This meant I had to stop teaching and live like a pauper for a few years. Through my work, however, I had some wonderful opportunities to develop emotional intelligence curriculum with distinguished partners in the community.

Which leads me to my current project: Adaptimist Insights.

This is essentially the for-profit arm of my research–which was heavily influenced by a lifetime’s worth of experiences. I offer public classes, coaching and private training aimed at providing working professionals from all walks of life with a repertoire of advanced emotional and social competencies that will help them flourish in their careers. All of this content is backed by science and, through my work at the university, I am able to provide assessment services and empirical roadmaps to help my clients get where they want to go. Here is my logo:

Starting today (September 14, 2017), I turned on the lights. This is a soft launch – for now you can visit the website and download a free, 49 page e-book that offers 20 very useful emotional- and social-based tricks that you can use immediately to get better results on your current project. On October 16, 2017, I will formally launch Adaptimist and folks will be able to sign up for my public classes and also buy corporate training packages.

I still get e-mails from people saying that the content at PapercutPM is helpful – so I will keep the articles here live. The mailing list and contact forms, however, I will shut down as I focus exclusively on developing Adaptimist.

I’m very excited about my new venture, but also very nervous. I would be much obliged if you would meet me over there! It will be good to have the support of my friends.

Thanks for a wonderful ride!

Geoff.

I’m a professor of project management at the college where I work. My students continually amaze me with their insights, passion and all-around awesomeness. I figure they deserve access to more answers than I can give them by myself. This site is for them.
